Banksy, Girl with Balloon

Everything that is shrouded in mystery in the field of art is successful. The bigger the enigma, the greater the curiosity of the public.
How can we not think of Leonardo’s endless studies on the Mona Lisa just to give an example?
Today, I want to put aside the Renaissance and tell you about something very contemporary: he is the undisputed king of street art, he is Banksy!
The questions are endless: Who is he? Where does he live? What’s in his art?
Every statement must be made with “in quotes” but why not try to write about him, who is one of my contemporary passions?
The artist was presumably born in Bristol in the 1970s and is considered among the greatest exponents of street art. There are those who associate his identity with Robert Gunningham or with Robert of Naja from Massive Attack.
Let’s go step by step, how does his career start?
Banksy, strictly hooded, illegally introduces his works to the London museums and then flees, creating a new chapter in the history of art.
You have to open your mind and horizons, it is also difficult for me to combine the Sistine Chapel vault made by Michelangelo with a simple stencil, but art is a combination of many ingenious factors!
Banksy is the faceless artist, his appearances are very few, the frames that can be drawn from the interviews. Anonymity is his lifestyle and undoubtedly the key to his success. Critics wonder, is Banksy a single individual or a collective of artists?
I try to go further and understand the messages of his art. This is what really fascinates me.
I was lucky enough to see some of his work live, in my art journeys, a masterpiece is in my beloved Naples for example, or in the exhibitions “authorized by him”. In 2016 Palazzo Cipolla in Rome hosted a successful one, where for the first time my eyes met the iconic and super “replicated” Girl with Balloon! There is no bag, T-shirt, stencil, gadget in general that has not been affected by this image.
Girl with Balloon is a series that Banksy began in 2002. Made with the stencil technique, which he prefers being a “landslide with a can”, it appears several times in the city of London.
The first realization was in Waterloo Bridge, South Bank, now no longer visible. Next to the girl also appeared the writing “There is always hope”.
The typical subject of Banksy, a teenager, is present and undoubtedly a lot of solitude comes through. The little girl lets go of the balloon or it escapes, this too can be an interpretation interpreted and it’s sad, but behind her, the message “there is always hope” is an invitation warning to always look ahead.
Often it happened that Banksy’s works were destroyed by vandalism or directly detached for resale at auction, especially when the artist’s fame was gradually growing.
From the different creations on the wall support, Banksy created a version of the girl with spray paint and acrylic on canvas and sold it privately in 2006.
In 2018 during an auction at Sotheby’s the unexpected or perhaps simply the ingenious touch of the artist happened.
Once the anonymous buyer was found for a million dollars, the work destroyed itself, slipping off the frame and shredding automatically.
The art world talked about it for days, did Banksy send a coded message, was he at Sotheby’s, did he operate the mechanism? Why did he do it? From a million dollars to a pound sterling, the pace was short.
Banksy is against any form of commodification of art and has made it clear, transforming an auction into a true artistic performance.

Tutto ciò che è avvolto dal mistero nel campo dell’arte, ha successo. Più c’è l’enigma, maggiore è la curiosità del pubblico. Come non pensare agli studi infiniti sulla Gioconda di Leonardo? Solo per citare un esempio.
Oggi, voglio mettere da parte il Rinascimento e parlarvi di qualcosa di molto contemporaneo: lui è il re indiscusso della street art, lui è Banksy!
Le domande sono infinite: Chi è? Dove vive? Cosa c’è nella sua arte?
Ogni affermazione deve essere fatta con le “pinze”, ma perchè non provare a scrivere su di lui che è tra le mie passioni contemporanee?
L’artista è presumibilmente nato a Bristol negli anni 70 ed è considerato tra i massimi esponenti della street art. C’è chi associa la sua identità a Robert Gunningham o con Robert del Naja dei Massive Attack.
Andiamo con ordine. Come inizia la sua carriera?
Banksy introduce illegalmente le sue opere nei musei londinesi, rigorosamente incappucciato e poi fugge, dando vita ad un nuovo capitolo della storia dell’arte.
Bisogna aprire la mente e gli orizzonti, è difficile anche per me accostare la volta della Sistina ad un semplice Stencil, ma l’arte è l’insieme di tanti fattori geniali!
Banksy è l’artista senza volto. Pochissime sono le sue apparizioni, i fotogrammi che si possono trarre dalle interviste. L’anonimato è il suo stile di vita ed è indubbiamente la chiave del suo successo. La critica si interroga: Banksy è un singolo individuo o un collettivo di artisti?
Cerco di andare oltre e capire i messaggi della sua arte. E’ questo che realmente mi affascina.
Ho avuto la fortuna di vedere dal vivo qualche sua opera, nei miei viaggi artistici. Un capolavoro è nella mia Napoli. Qualche altra opera l’ho ammirata nelle mostre “da lui autorizzate”.
Nel 2016 Palazzo Cipolla a Roma ne ospitò una di successo, dove per la prima volta i miei occhi incontrarono l’iconica e super “replicata” –Girl with Balloon! Non c’è borsa, t-shirt, stencil, gadgets in generale che non sia stata colpita da questa immagine.
Girl with Balloon è una serie che Banksy inizia nel 2002. Realizzata con la tecnica dello stencil, che lui predilige essendo una “frana con la bomboletta”, appare più volte nella città di Londra.
La prima realizzazione fu a Waterloo Bridge, South Bank, oggi non più visibile. Accanto alla bambina appariva anche la scritta “There is always hope”.
E’ presente il tipico soggetto di Banksy, un adolescente, e traspare indubbiamente molta solitudine. La Bambina lascia andare il palloncino o le sfugge, anche questo può essere interpretato, ed è triste, ma alle sue spalle il messaggio “c’è sempre speranza” è un monito per guardare sempre avanti.
Spesso è accaduto che le opere di Banksy siano state distrutte da atti vandalici o direttamente staccate per essere rivendute all’asta, soprattutto quando la fama dell’artista andava via via crescendo.
Dalle diverse realizzazione sul supporto murario Banksy realizza una versione della bambina con vernice spray e acrilico su tela e la vende privatamente nel 2006.
Nel 2018 durante un’asta da Sotheby’s accade l’imprevedibile o forse semplicemente il tocco geniale dell’artista.
Trovato l’acquirente anomino per un milione di dollari, l’opera si autodistrugge, sfilandosi dalla cornice e triturandosi automaticamente.
Il mondo dell’arte ne parla per giorni, Banksy lancia messaggi in codice, era presente da Sotheby’s, ha azionato lui il meccanismo? Perchè lo ha fatto? Da un milione di dollari ad una sterlina, il passo è stato breve. L’opera è andata distrutta.
Banksy è contro ogni forma della mercificazione dell’arte e lo ha fatto capire a chiare lettere, trasformando un’asta in una vera performance artistica.
Ogni desiderio di distruzione è anche desiderio di creazione.
